๐ค๏ธ GENERAL QUESTIONS
What is WL Alert?
WL Alert is an independent alert notification platform built specifically for Davis WeatherLink users. It connects to your WeatherLink account via the official API, monitors your live station data continuously, and sends email and SMS notifications the moment a weather condition crosses a threshold you have defined.
It was built to solve one specific, well-known problem: WeatherLink’s built-in SMS alerts do not work in the Philippines. WL Alert does.
Who is WL Alert for?
WL Alert is for anyone who owns a Davis weather station connected to WeatherLink.com and needs reliable, automatic weather alerts โ particularly users in the Philippines where WeatherLink’s SMS delivery is unavailable. This includes farmers, school administrators, facility managers, property owners, operations teams, and researchers who depend on weather data to make safety and operational decisions.
Is WL Alert affiliated with Davis Instruments or WeatherLink?
No. WL Alert is a completely independent platform. It uses the official WeatherLink API to access your station data, but it has no official relationship with Davis Instruments or WeatherLink.com. WeatherLink is a registered trademark of Davis Instruments Corp.
Is WL Alert a replacement for WeatherLink?
No. WL Alert is not a replacement for WeatherLink โ it is a complement to it. You keep using WeatherLink exactly as you do now for your dashboard, data history, and station management. WL Alert simply adds the SMS alert delivery capability that WeatherLink’s own system cannot provide for users in the Philippines and other unsupported regions.
What weather stations are compatible with WL Alert?
WL Alert works with any Davis weather station that is registered and active on WeatherLink.com. If your station appears in your WeatherLink dashboard and is reporting live data through the API, WL Alert can monitor it and send alerts based on its readings.
Does WL Alert work outside the Philippines?
Yes. While WL Alert was built with Philippine users in mind, it works for any Davis WeatherLink user anywhere in the world. Email alerts work globally on all plans. SMS delivery supports international numbers beyond the Philippines โ coverage may vary by country and carrier. If you want to confirm SMS compatibility for your specific network before subscribing, contact us and we will check for you.
โ๏ธ SETUP & GETTING STARTED
Do I need a WeatherLink account to use WL Alert?
Yes. WL Alert connects to WeatherLink via the official API, so an active WeatherLink.com account with at least one registered Davis weather station is required. If you have a Davis station but have not set it up on WeatherLink yet, complete that step first before using WL Alert.
How do I connect my WeatherLink account to WL Alert?
You will need your WeatherLink API key and API secret. Here is how to find them:
- Log in to your account at weatherlink.com
- Go to your Account settings
- Navigate to the API Keys section
- Generate a new key or copy your existing API key and secret
- Paste both credentials into WL Alert when prompted during setup
Once entered, WL Alert immediately pulls in all registered stations linked to that API key. The entire process takes under 5 minutes.
Is my WeatherLink API key safe with WL Alert?
Yes. Your API credentials are stored in encrypted form and are never displayed in full after entry. They are used exclusively to fetch your live weather data for alert rule evaluation โ nothing else. They are never shared with third parties. You can revoke access at any time by removing your credentials from WL Alert or by regenerating your API key directly in your WeatherLink account settings.
How long does setup take?
Most users complete the full setup โ account created, WeatherLink connected, first alert rule configured, and first test alert received โ in under 5 minutes. The process is intentionally straightforward and designed to get out of your way quickly.
Can I connect multiple weather stations?
Yes. The number of stations you can monitor simultaneously depends on your plan. Free supports 1 station, Starter supports up to 5, Pro supports up to 15, and Business supports up to 30. All stations linked to your WeatherLink API key are pulled in automatically when you connect your account.
Can I use WL Alert if I have more than one WeatherLink account?
Each WL Alert account connects to one set of WeatherLink API credentials at a time. If you manage stations across multiple WeatherLink accounts, contact us to discuss the best setup for your situation.
๐ ALERT RULES
What weather metrics can I set alerts for?
WL Alert supports threshold alerts for any metric your Davis weather station reports through the WeatherLink API. Commonly monitored metrics include:
- Heat Index
- Outdoor and indoor temperature
- Relative humidity
- Wind speed
- UV Index
- Rainfall rate
- Barometric pressure
- Dew point
- etc.
If your station reports it and WeatherLink surfaces it through the API, WL Alert can watch it and trigger alerts based on it.
How do threshold rules work?
Each alert rule has three components: a metric, an operator, and a value. For example โ Heat Index, greater than, 42ยฐC. When WL Alert polls your station data and finds the Heat Index is above 42ยฐC, the rule fires and your alert is sent immediately. You can also create rules for conditions going below a value โ for example, Temperature less than 10ยฐC for cold stress or frost risk alerts.

You can also create rules for conditions going below a value โ for example, Temperature less than 10ยฐC for cold stress or frost risk alerts.
How many alert rules can I have active at once?
The number of active rules depends on your plan. Free allows up to 3 rules, Starter up to 12, Pro up to 40, and Business up to 200. Rules can be created across any of your connected stations and for any supported metric.
Can I send an alert to more than one person?
Yes. Every alert rule supports multiple recipients. Add as many email addresses or phone numbers as needed. Each recipient on the list receives their own individual notification when the rule fires. Each delivery counts as one credit toward your monthly allowance.
Can I customize the alert message?
Yes. WL Alert includes a message builder where you can write your own alert template using dynamic placeholders. These are automatically replaced with live data when the alert fires โ including the station name, the metric reading at trigger time, the threshold value, and the exact timestamp. Because the same message is sent via both email and SMS, keeping it concise ensures every recipient gets a clear, readable notification on any device.
Will I receive repeated alerts if conditions stay above the threshold?
WL Alert includes cooldown controls to prevent alert fatigue. Once a rule fires, a cooldown period activates before that same rule can fire again for the same sustained condition. This ensures your team is alerted when something happens โ not notified repeatedly every polling cycle for as long as conditions remain elevated.
How often does WL Alert check my station data?
Polling frequency depends on your plan:
- Free โ every 15 minutes
- Starter โ every 5 minutes
- Pro โ every 2 minutes
- Business โ every 1 minute
Faster polling means WL Alert detects threshold breaches sooner and delivers alerts more quickly after conditions change. For operations where rapid weather changes are a concern, Pro or Business plans provide the fastest response times.
๐ฑ SMS & EMAIL DELIVERY
Why doesn’t WeatherLink’s own SMS work in the Philippines?
WeatherLink has a built-in alarm system that supports SMS โ but only through a limited list of approved network courier partners. Most Philippine mobile networks, including Globe, Smart, and DITO, are not included on that list. As a result, WeatherLink’s SMS option either does not appear or fails to deliver for the majority of users in the Philippines. WL Alert uses its own independent SMS gateway that supports Philippine networks directly, with no dependency on WeatherLink’s courier partnerships.
Which Philippine networks does WL Alert SMS support?
WL Alert’s SMS gateway supports major Philippine mobile networks including Globe, Smart, and DITO. If you are unsure whether your specific number is supported, create a free account and send a test alert to verify delivery before subscribing to a paid plan.
Is SMS available on all plans?
SMS delivery is available on Pro and Business plans. Free and Starter plans support email alerts only. If SMS is your primary reason for using WL Alert โ which it is for most Philippine users โ the Pro plan at $24 per month is the most cost-effective option to unlock it.
What does an SMS alert look like?
A standard WL Alert SMS message looks like this:
Alert from Filipinas Cacao
Heat Index is now 43ยฐC, which is above the threshold of 42ยฐC.
Rule: Heat Index above 42ยฐC
Triggered: May 14, 2025 at 12:54 PM
The message is short, specific, and tells the recipient exactly what happened, where, and when. You can customize this template in the message builder to include additional context relevant to your operation.
What if an SMS does not arrive?
Occasional SMS delivery delays can occur due to network congestion or gateway conditions outside our control. If you consistently experience delivery failures, check that the recipient number is entered correctly with the proper country code โ +63 for the Philippines. If the issue persists, contact us with the affected number and rule details and we will investigate promptly. Running email alerts alongside SMS is always a reliable backup to ensure no event goes unnoticed.
Does the recipient need to install an app to receive SMS alerts?
No. SMS alerts are delivered as standard text messages directly to the recipient’s mobile number. No app, no internet connection, and no account registration is required on the recipient’s end. They simply receive a text message on their phone.
๐ณ PLANS, BILLING & CREDITS
Is there a free plan?
Yes. The Free plan lets you connect 1 WeatherLink station, create up to 3 alert rules, and receive email alerts with 50 delivery credits per month. It is a practical way to test WL Alert with your station and confirm compatibility before committing to a paid plan. No credit card is required to sign up.
What is a delivery credit?
Each notification WL Alert sends โ whether email or SMS โ consumes one delivery credit from your monthly plan allowance. If an alert rule fires and notifies four recipients, that uses four credits. Credits reset automatically on your billing anniversary each month and do not carry over to the next period.
What happens when I run out of credits?
If your monthly credits are exhausted before your reset date, alert deliveries will pause until credits renew at the start of your next billing cycle. To avoid interruption, you can purchase an add-on credit pack at any time without changing your plan. We recommend monitoring your credit usage in the analytics dashboard so you are never caught off guard during an active weather event.
What are add-on credit packs?
Add-on credit packs are one-time top-ups that supplement your monthly plan allowance when credits run low. Three options are available:
- Starter Top-Up โ 250 credits for $9. Ideal for occasional overflow.
- Growth Top-Up โ 1,000 credits for $29. Best for seasonal spikes or multiple active stations firing simultaneously.
- Operations Reserve โ 5,000 credits for $99. For heavy alerting workloads and large-scale operations.
Add-on credits are consumed after your monthly plan credits are used up. They are non-refundable once applied to your account.
Can I upgrade or downgrade my plan?
Yes. You can change your plan at any time. Plan changes take effect at the start of your next billing cycle. If you need to upgrade mid-cycle due to an urgent operational need, contact us and we will work out a fair arrangement.
Can I negotiate pricing or request a custom quote?
Yes. WL Alert is open to custom pricing arrangements for schools, community organizations, agricultural cooperatives, research institutions, and other users whose needs do not fit neatly into the standard plans. Reach out through the contact form before deciding the pricing isn’t right for you โ we would rather find an arrangement that works for both sides than turn away a user with a genuine need.
Are there refunds?
Because WL Alert is a digital subscription service, payments are generally non-refundable once a billing period has started. However, refund requests are reviewed on a case-by-case basis. If you have been charged in error or have a legitimate concern, contact us directly and we will work toward a fair resolution.
How do I cancel my subscription?
You can cancel your subscription at any time through your account settings or by contacting us directly. After cancellation, your paid plan features remain active until the end of your current billing period. You will not be charged again after that date.
๐ PRIVACY & SECURITY
Is my data safe with WL Alert?
Yes. WL Alert uses encrypted connections across all pages and API communications. Your WeatherLink API credentials are stored in encrypted form and are never displayed in full after entry. Your personal information and contact details are never sold to third parties or used for advertising. Full details are available in our Privacy Policy.
Does WL Alert store my weather data?
Yes. WL Alert store raw weather readings from your station. It reads live data at each polling interval solely to evaluate your alert rules. Alert event logs โ which record that a rule fired, what value triggered it, which station it came from, and when โ are stored as part of your alert history. These records are linked to your account and are removed when you close your account.
Can I delete my account and all associated data?
Yes. You can request full account deletion at any time by contacting us through the website. Your personal data, alert rules, and history records will be permanently deleted within 30 days of your request, except where retention is required for legal or billing compliance purposes.
๐ ๏ธ TROUBLESHOOTING
My stations are not showing up after I connected my API credentials.
Check that you have entered both the API key and API secret correctly โ both are required. Confirm that your WeatherLink account has at least one active, registered station currently reporting live data. If the problem continues, try regenerating your API key in WeatherLink and re-entering the updated credentials in WL Alert. If stations still do not appear, contact us with your station details and we will investigate.
My alert rule is not firing even though conditions have crossed the threshold.
A few things to check before contacting support:
- Confirm the rule is active and not paused or disabled
- Check your delivery credits โ if your monthly allowance is exhausted, alerts will not send
- Review your cooldown settings โ if the rule fired recently it may still be within the cooldown window
- Verify the correct metric and operator are selected for your intended condition
- Confirm that at least one valid recipient is listed on the rule
- Check that your WeatherLink API credentials are still valid and have not expired or been regenerated
If everything appears correct and the rule still is not firing, contact us with the rule name, station name, and the metric value you observed. We will investigate and respond promptly.
I am not receiving SMS alerts on my phone.
Start by confirming the following:
- Your mobile number is entered correctly with the full country code โ +63 for the Philippines
- You are on a Pro or Business plan โ SMS is not available on Free or Starter plans
- Your delivery credits have not been exhausted for the month
- The rule is active and has at least one SMS recipient listed
If all of the above are correct and SMS is still not arriving, contact us with the affected number, your plan details, and the rule name. SMS delivery issues are investigated as a priority.
My WeatherLink API connection stopped working.
This usually happens when an API key has been regenerated or revoked in your WeatherLink account. Log in to WeatherLink, check your API Keys section, and copy the current active key and secret. Re-enter the updated credentials in your WL Alert account settings. If the issue is not related to a key change, contact us and we will help you diagnose the problem.
I want to report a bug or suggest a feature.
We welcome both. Use the contact form on our website to describe the issue or idea in as much detail as possible. For bugs, include what happened, what you expected to happen, and any relevant rule or station details. Screenshots are always helpful. Every report and suggestion is reviewed by our team.
